Scope and Contents These 54 World War II letters dated from 1943 - 1945 were mostly written by Johnnie Newton. The sensitive young man wrote simple and folksy words to his folks back home. He always began the letters wishing his family well and telling them about the weather. Joseph Sweetman Ames became Director of the Physical Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University in 1901. He taught until becoming provost of the University in 1926 and president from 1929 to 1935. The Keysers accumulated wealth in the 19th and 20th centuries through mercantile businesses, inheritance, and a variety of industries, including the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, copper and iron works, and investments in land and real estate. They used some of this wealth to finance Baltimore’s public and private institutions, including Johns Hopkins University.
